Steroid Injections in Barnsley & Knottingley

Corticosteroid Injection Therapy at The Physio & Injection Clinic:

At The Physio & Injection Clinic in Barnsley and Knottingley, we offer corticosteroid (steroid) injections as part of our specialist musculoskeletal care. We understand that not everyone improves with physiotherapy advice, manual therapy, and exercise alone. In some cases, steroid injections are a highly effective way to reduce pain and inflammation and allow rehabilitation to progress more comfortably.

What Are Steroid Injections?

Cortisone (steroid) is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication commonly used in medical practice to reduce inflammation associated with injury, overuse, and degenerative conditions. When carefully injected into an inflamed joint or soft tissue structure, it can be highly effective at reducing inflammation, swelling, and pain, helping to restore movement and function.

Unlike oral medication, steroid injections deliver treatment directly to the source of pain, making them a targeted and effective option for many musculoskeletal conditions.

At our Barnsley and Knottingley clinics, all injections are carried out by a qualified HCPC registered physiotherapist, ensuring safe and evidence-based care.

How Often Can Steroid Injections Be Given?

Steroid injections can typically be repeated up to three times per year in the same area, when clinically appropriate. They are often used as a conservative management option for degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and can make rehabilitation more comfortable and effective.

What Are the Benefits of Steroid Injections?

Steroid injections help treat the symptoms of your underlying condition, particularly pain and inflammation. Benefits include:

  • Rapid pain relief – often starting within hours or days

  • Reduced inflammation and swelling

  • Improved movement and joint function

  • Supports physiotherapy and rehabilitation

  • May delay or avoid the need for surgery

  • Helps you return to normal activities more comfortably

The speed of relief and how long it lasts can vary depending on your condition, but effects often last several weeks to months.

Are Steroid Injections Right for Me?

Steroid injections are commonly recommended for osteoarthritis and many other inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions, particularly when pain is limiting daily activity, work, or rehabilitation.

They may be suitable if:

  • Your joint or soft tissue pain is driven by inflammation

  • Physiotherapy alone has not provided enough relief

  • You need short- to medium-term pain reduction to progress with rehab

Before any injection, you will undergo a full clinical assessment to ensure steroid injection therapy is safe, appropriate, and likely to benefit your condition.

What Happens During a Steroid Injection?

Depending on where your pain and inflammation are located, steroids may be injected:

  • Directly into a joint (intra-articular injection)

  • Into the soft tissues around a joint (peri-articular injection)

Most injections are quick and straightforward. They are performed by your physiotherapist and may include a local anaesthetic to reduce discomfort. This can provide immediate pain relief, although temporary numbness may last for up to 24 hours.

You may be asked to remain in the clinic for 10–15 minutes after the injection as a precaution. Wearing loose-fitting clothing can help make the procedure more comfortable.

Recovery After a Steroid Injection

Most people tolerate steroid injections very well. Some key points:

  • Mild discomfort at the time of injection is common

  • Occasionally, a temporary flare-up of pain may occur within the first 24 hours — this usually settles within a few days

  • Simple pain relief such as paracetamol can help

  • You may be advised to rest the area for 24–48 hours before returning gradually to activity

Potential Risks & Side Effects

Steroid injections are generally safe when used appropriately. Possible side effects include:

  • Temporary post-injection pain flare

  • Skin thinning or colour change at the injection site (rare)

  • Infection (very rare)

  • Temporary rise in blood sugar levels (important for diabetic patients)

Compared to steroid tablets, injections use a much lower dose, meaning whole-body side effects such as weight gain are very uncommon, especially when injections are not given frequently.

If your joint becomes increasingly painful, hot, or you feel unwell following an injection, you should seek medical advice immediately.
